3 Ways to be Healthy & Happy this Autumn

Essential Oils! Fragrant Health & Happiness!

Autumn AromatherapyEssential oils smell amazing and they also possess profound immune boosting, healing and protecting powers.

These fragrant plant extracts provide a wonderful aroma for a room, a home and a person and seeing as the home is our personal space, why not make it that bit more personal by creating your own wonderful home fragrance? I diffuse essential oils and burn incense everyday and whenever anyone walks into my home, the first thing they notice and comment on is how wonderful it smells.

You can also make your own simple and natural perfumes using 6 drops of essential oil in 10ml of a vegetable oil such as sweet almond oil, cold pressed sunflower oil or even organic olive oil. This is a wonderful extension of your personality. A very good friend of mine who I would like to see more often, always comes across to give me a hug. She admitted not so long ago that she was most interested in finding out what fragrance I was using!

But, why would creating a nice fragrance in your home and about your person enhance health & happiness?

  • When placed in an oil burner or diffuser they kill airborne microbes helping to stop the onset or spread of infection.
  • When diluted and applied to the skin they nourish, hydrate, heal and replenish the skin, helping to keep it soft, moisturized, supple and glowing.
  • Essential oils enter the blood stream through inhalation and application the skin. When they enter the blood stream they help to strengthen our defences, boost general immunity, fight off internal infections, and prevent illness and infection. They also speed up the process of recovery when we are ill.

They are amazing mood enhancers because our sense of smell is directly linked to the part of the brain that controls emotions, feelings, behaviour, and memory. They have the power to lift our spirits, ease stress and tension, stimulate the mind, aid focus and concentration as well as promote relaxation, rest and sleep.

Essential oils are therefore hugely valuable aids for school (study, homework, and revision), for working from home, for resting and relaxing and they help keep those nasty bugs at bay that pop around each autumn and winter as the weather changes and cools.

Empowering Questions: Positive Intention!

At the start of your day, take 5 minutes to create some positive thoughts about the day ahead and what you can achieve. Ask yourself some simple but empowering questions.

The key is in the question; the more empowering and inspiring the question, the more positive and energising the answer.

Positive IntentionsTo make it even more powerful, take one essential oil that is invigorating such as Thyme, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Lemon, or Scotch Pine. Smell the scent as you ask yourself these questions. Make sure you use the same oil every morning and that you ask yourself the same questions.

  • How can I make today better than yesterday?
  • What can I contribute to the world today? How can I make it a better place?
  • What would be the best thing that could happen today? What could be the best outcome of today?

You might also like to do this with your partner, family or house mates.

Giving Thanks: The Attitude of Gratitude!

At the end of the day, sit quietly for a few moments and reflect on the day’s positive events. If you have negative emotions and feelings about the day this exercise can be especially beneficial. You might also like to do this with your partner, family or house mates.

The key is in the question; questions require an answer and if we use positive questions, they encourage positive replies

To make it even more powerful, take one essential oil that is calming and relaxing such as Lavender, Orange, Frankincense or Australian Sandalwood. Smell the scent as you ask yourself these questions. Use the same oil every evening and ask the same empowering questions

  • What am I pleased about today? What was good?Gratitude
  • What did I do well today?
  • What did I contribute today?
  • What did I receive today?
  • What can I be thankful for right now?

 

Forgive yourself for any wrong doing, accept negative emotions and give thanks for all that is good, no matter how small.

So there we have it. A few nice and simple suggestions for healthy bodies and happy minds this autumn. Aromatherapy together with the positive power that’s within us all is a wonderful way of promoting happiness, health and wealth, enjoying our days and stimulating a greater sense of self awareness.

A Beginners Guide to Essential Oils – Part II – Blending Made Easy!

Blending with Essential Oils

Using essential oils at home is great fun as well as fantastically good for your physical, emotional and spiritual health. If you can blend essential oils then the fun becomes that much greater! Essential oil blending is like cooking, knitting, sewing or drawing and sculpting and in fact any kind of creative activity. The results can be astounding.

We can make our own personal fragrances, use them in our handmade products as well as in our oil diffusers and burners at home. We can even make our own natural perfumes!

But where do we start? What are the general do’s and don’ts?

This is a beginner’s guide to blending with essential oils to help you get started and to demonstrate that it can be really easy if you follow my simple formula.

First Of All

Rule Number 1

There aren’t really any rules because smell is completely personal and varies from one day to the next.

There are some simple guidelines that you can follow to get you started and you just need to be aware of the health & safety information. Click here for key health, safety & storage information.

 

To keep things really simple, we’ll just focus on 3 of the core fragrance groups – fruity, floral and oriental – take a few of the most commonly used essential oils and then all you need to do is follow the 6 simple steps!

Please Note *

If you use *Ylang Ylang, I would only advise to use it as the oil with the lowest dilution in evey blend because it is extremely strong and will over-power the aromas given off by the other oils.

Step One

Calculate the total number of essential oil drops required for your blend.

Step Two

Calculate how many drops are required for your main part (half), second part (approx 2/3 of the remaining) and final part (approx 1/3 of the remaining).

For example

  • Total Drops – 10 drops
  • Main – 5 drops
  • Second – 3 drops
  • Final – 2 drops

Step Three

Choose the main part for your fragrance – Fruity, Floral or Oriental.

Choose the second and final parts for your fragrance from the remaining groups.

For example

  • Main = Fruity
  • Second = Floral
  • Final = Oriental

Step Four

Choose the essential oils you would like to use from each category – Main, Second, Final

For example

  • Main = Fruity = Bergamot
  • Second = Floral = Geranium
  • Final = Oriental = Benzoin

Step Five

Calculate the amount of drops you require from each theme

For example

  • Main= Fruity = Bergamot = 5 drops
  • Second = Floral = Geranium = 3 drops
  • Final= Oriental = Benzoin = 2 drops

Step Six

Carefully add your drops to your blend and place the top firmly on your product.

Hey Presto!

It’s as easy as that! Now you are ready to go with your own bespoke fragrance and personalised product!

They are amazing gifts of nature with wonderful healing powers that bring with them amazing fragrances from the plant kingdom.

Essential oils enrich our lives with their amazing aromas, they enhance our happiness and wellbeing, they bring a natural glowing complexion to our skin and they also boost immunity, aid the process of recovery from ill-health, injury and dis-ease as well as alleviate everyday complaints (coughs, colds, aches and pains).

All round holistic and natural health & happiness!

I practice and teach Aromatherapy because I believe in the natural healing powers that these magical gifts bring to our everyday lives. It is just a case of finding out some basics, understanding the key safety information, knowing which essential oils to buy first and then having some information to help you get started.

Let’s look at some of the health benefits of a few key essential oils.

Permaculture Visits 506Lavender essential oil (lavendula angustifolia) has shown fantastic skin healing and preserving qualities. It is a very effective healing and replenishing agent for scars, burns, bites, cuts and wounds.

It has also shown to have a profound effect on our nervous system and our psyche witnessed through reduction of stress, anxiety and tension to the promotion of calmness, rest, relaxation and sleep. Indeed it is suggested that Lavender has a regulating and balancing effect on our Central Nervous System.

 

Tea Tree

Tea Tree essential oil (melaleuca alternifolia) is active against all forms of harmful organisms; bacteria, fungi and viruses.

It is therefore a powerful immune-stimulant, immensely helpful for the recovery from illness and disease.

 

 

Eucalytpus Globulus

Eucalyptus essential oil (eucalyptus globulus) is another commonly known, widely used and valued oil that is antiviral, antiseptic, decongestant and expectorant. This means that it is excellent for the respiratory tract helping to kill infection, clear out excess mucous, and ease cold or flu symptoms.

When vaporised it kills airborne microbes and at the same time it helps to clear stuffy heads due to its clear, sharp and vick-like odour.

 

 

Permaculture Visits 481Rose essential oil (rosa damascena / rosa centifolia) is a tonic for the heart, liver, stomach and uterus. It is said to help with hangovers and nausea and that it helps to cleanse and purge toxins from the body. It has shown qualities that help with the female menstrual cycle, calming PMT whilst also helping with infertility, impotence and frigidity. Rose is very soothing and uplifting for the emotions which is helpful during times of grief, sadness, and depression. In spiritual terms it has been suggested that Rose focuses on the heart bringing a wonderful feeling of happiness to the individual.

Sense of Smell

We’re surrounded by smells everyday and often we don’t realize it, but smell is one of our key senses. We experience the world through our sense of sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. Smell is also arguably the key factor behind taste as well!

By becoming more aware of (and in tune with) each of our senses, our experience of the world is heightened. If we can do that in a positive and empowering manner, then life will become a great adventure and a joy.

Our sense of smell is amazing and can be used to huge bring about positive experiences! Smell is controlled by our brain’s limbic system which also controls emotions, behaviour, memory, and motivation.

Smell therefore influences the pleasure centre of our brain. When something smells good, we make a positive judgment about it and we start to feel happier, and then create more positive thoughts and feelings.
